Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson is the daughter of British lawyers Jacqueline Luesby (born in Paris) as well as Chris Watson (born in Paris). At the age five she relocated from London to Oxfordshire to attend The Dragon School. At the age of six, Emma was aware that she wanted to be an actress. For a number of years she studied at the Oxford branch of Stagecoach Theatre Arts a part-time theater school, where she learned performing and singing. As part of a school production and the stage of a Stagecoach production, Emma was the lead at the age 10 and performed. In 1999 casting began for Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone (2001) the film adaptation of British author J.K. Rowling's bestselling novel. Emma was discovered through Emma's Oxford Theatre instructor. David Heyman told Emma along together with Rupert Grint, Daniel Radcliffe that they had all been through eight consecutive auditions. Emma's debut film coincided with the release Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2002). The film set records in terms of its opening and weekend ticket numbers, and was the top-grossing 2001 film. Film critics praised the film as well as the performance of three young stars. The Daily Telegraph praised Emma for her outstanding performance. Emma's performance was recognized and was awarded five awards for the movie.
